Has he or hasn't he? The latest news direct from Alan Hinkes' sponsor Berghaus as he strives to become the first Briton to climb all of the world's 8,000-metre peaks.

Following recent unconfirmed reports that Alan Hinkes has summited Kangchenjunga, the guys at Berghaus have asked us to clarify the situation.

They tell us that they haven't yet heard from Alan and until they get definite confirmation cannot confirm or deny that Alan has summited. Here's what they say:

'Rumours are rife around the Himalaya about Alan's successful summit on Kangchenjunga, but at the moment these are all unconfirmed. Alan set out for a summit attempt over the weekend when the weather was looking favourable.  With no other expeditions on Kangchenjunga news is scarce and Alan will typically call in as soon as he returns.  We haven't had that call yet.

'News reports in the UK have heralded a success but these reports are a little ambiguous and have gone short of any concrete announcement of success.  We're hoping to hear from Alan in the next couple of days and as soon as we do we'll be shouting it from the rooftops.  We wish him a speedy ascent and descent to Base camp.'

We'll bring you the latest news direct from Berghaus just as soon as we have it. In the mean time, an OM exclusive reveals that Leo Houlding and Chris Bonington are today due in Madrid for a medical prior to becoming Real's first signings of the close season. A normally reliable source revealed that Sir Chris will play a holding midfield role while Leo will almost certainly feature as an attacking wing back...

I was just chatting with Berghaus and they've been in touch with Alan's agent in Nepal, Bikram. The bottom line is that while Alan stocked a number of camps on the mountain and weather is good at the moment, it's quite possible that some of the camps were damaged by storms before the current window, so it could take a while for him to climb the mountain.

He doesn't have a small-sized sat phone on the mountain to save weight, so until he's back at base camp, there's no real way of knowing what's happening and it could be several days yet before concrete news emerges.

Finally, apparently when Alan heard that Ed Viesturs had summited Annapurna he asked Berghaus to pass on his congratulations to Ed - first American to climb all the 8,000ers - and in return, Ed mailed back wishing Alan well on Kangchenjunga.

Anyhow, fingers crossed for Alan, we'll let you know any news just as soon as we have it.

Apparently Alan Hinkes has done it according to an email I got from Guy Proctor (who else!):

"Berghaus are exceptionally pleased to announce the successful summit of Kangchenjunga by British mountaineer Alan Hinkes. This has placed Alan in the history books as the first Briton to have climbed all of the world's highest peaks and is an exceptional achievement.

Please find below the official summit announcement press release with contact details as to how to obtain further information and images."

I'd copy the press release, but it's a bit long..
