Britain's 8000-meter peak man Alan Hinkes has climbed Aconcagua in
atrocious conditions while guiding for Sheffield-based Jagged
Globe.
Hinkes, along with a single client made reportedly the only
successful summit bid on the trip, which was hampered by extreme cold
and blizzard conditions. Aconcagua, just shy of 7000 metres, is the
highest peak in South America and the fourth of the 'Seven Summits'
scaled by Hinkes. He has also climbed Denali, Kilimanjaro and of
course Everest.
The Berghaus-sponsored climber - see
profile - is quoted in the Teeside
Evening Gazette as saying: 'Aconcagua was a lot of hard work. It
was like a full Scottish winter but Himalayan in scale. One man
managed to get to the summit with me.'
Come the Spring it should be back to business for Alan who has
three of the 8000ers left to climb; Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and
Kangchenjunga. He didn't travel out to the Himalaya in 2001, but will
undoubtledly be looking to share a peak permit for one of the three
remaining mountains shortly.
