The
OM forum's favourite mountaineer Annabelle Bond made a big splash in
this Sunday's Indpendent newspaper, which carried an interview with
the fastest ever woman to complete the Seven Summits Challenge along
with extracts from her climbing diary.
Just a month before climbing the first of her seven peaks,
Everest, Bond had an operation to remove a tumour from her uterus and
she subsequently dedicated her ascent of the highest mountain on each
of the world's continents to a friend, Lone vagn-Jensen, who'd died
of ovarian cancer a few months before. Astonishingly she managed to
complete the feat in just 360 days.
Annabellle has now raised a staggering £800,000 for the Eve
Appeal, with more to come. She's been criticised in some circles as
being a classic 'poor little rich girl', however in the interview she
stresses that although her father is the chairman of HSBC Bank, he
offered moral rather than financial support and the £100,000 of
sponsorship needed was raised off her own bat.
It's an interesting read and up on the Independent
web site right now along with sobering extracts from her Denali
diary detailing how a pair of twins she met on the mountain fell to
their deaths . More about Annabelle on her own web site www.annabellebond.com.
