Castro welcomes climbers to Cuba

A recent feature in Cuba's state-run newspaper, the Granma, reckons that Cuba has the best limestone in Latin America, muchos overhangs, apparently. Despite all this great rock, climbing's still a new sport, with the first routes being put up in 1997.

Ok, so he's not Cuban, but he helped them out and he's a darn site foxier than that Castro bloke/center>
The best routes are said to be in the western province of Pinar del Rio, in Viñales National Park, and the Sierra de Organos, and the best time to go is between October and April, with lower humidity than at other times of year. On the practical side, Cuba has some of the best health care in the world, so at least you'll be in good hands should you take a screamer.

More details and contacts for National Park permits here. Oh, and about that rum on the rocks: Havana Club - sí señor! Bacardi - no gracias, and don't even think about asking for Coca Cola...
