Nepal Maoists Cash In On Makalu Teams

Teams heading in to attempt Makalu have been the subject of demands for cash from Nepali Maoists reports everestnews.com

The Maoist revolt in Nepal rumbles on, with near daily reports of conflicts between the rebels and the army.

Generally, despite a few isolated incidents, trekkers have not been attacked by the rebels and, given the importance of tourism to the Nepali economy, Maoist leaders have given assurances that foreigners are not targets.

That doesn't mean trekkers and mountaineers are immune however, in a recent exclusive, the everestnews.com web site reports from Makalu 2002 that armed Maoists demanded money from teams on their way to attempt Makalu in the east of Nepal.
