New Meaning To Trad-Style Climbing...

A group of Iranian women have successfully summited the country's third highest peak wearing traditional Islamic dress

Ananova is reporting that eight female university students in Iran have succeeded in climbing the country's third highest mountain wearing full Islamic dress.

The students were led by a male guide on the climb up Mount Sabalan in north-west Iran and therefore had to cover up their bodies and faces with head scarves and long black robes. They reportedly now intend to attempt an ascent of Mount Agri in Turkey.

OM regulars will recall that last October a delegation of five British climbers visited Iran as representatives of the BMC and with the aim of developing contacts with Iranian climbers. They took part in coaching sessions with competition climbers, but most interestingly, Anne Arran was able to work - behind closed doors - with Iranian women climbers, who were tackling hard rock routes in traditional dress.
