There's a new project underway to help porters operating on
Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro.
The Himalayan Explorers Connection together with the International
Porters Protection Group and other organisations have set up The
Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project . They have located an office
in Moshi 'next to the Coffee Shop' and are scheduled to open this
month.
The new project is modelled on the highly successful Nepal Porter
Assistance Project and aims to provide loan clothing to porters with
the assistance of companies including Nike, Montrail, Mountain
Hardware, Smartwool, Thorlos, and Lowe Alpine.
In addition there will be a programme of classes for porters and
tourist education programs. HEC is appealing for anyone who would
like to get involved on the ground to contact
either the HEC in the US or Donovan
Pacholl in Tanzania.
The plight of porters on Kili was highlighted by a tragic incident
in September when three porters died high on the mountain after being
caught out in a storm wearing inadequate clothing and also by a
recent article in Climber by journalist Ed Douglas. See previous OM
articles below.
