A British tourist was among 18 people who died in a light aircraft
crash in one of Nepal's most popular trekking areas.
The Twin Otter light aricraft was apparently en route from Jomosom
to Pokhara, the trailhead for some of the most popular treks in Nepal
including the Annapurna Sancturary and Annapurna Circuit.
According to this
BBC story, bad weather may have been the cause of the accident,
recent monsoon conditions have been more savage than usual leading to
floods and landslides.
Due to time constraints and the mountainous terrain, may trekkers
use aircraft to reach airports high in the mountains and close to the
start of trekking routes. As anyone who has used the airstrip at
Lukla - the most convenient air field for Everest - will know, the
mountain terrain and conditions can make for precarious flying.
