Polartec Handing Out Dosh

Got a great expedition idea - here's how to land 'a substantial chunk' of funding

Got an idea for and adventure? Well don't just sit there on the sofa moping and dreaming, get off your butt and apply for an award from the Polartec Adventure Challenge.

The scheme, launched by Malden Mills, the manufacturers of Polartec fabrics, is now in its tenth year and offers what Polartec's PR agency describes as 'a significant chunk of funding' together with garments made from Polartec fabrics.

Walking the Pennine Way with llamas or just climbing Mont Blanc isn't going to hack it with the judges though, they're looking for ' the most compelling, passionate and original adventures'.

In the words of Advisory Board President and without oxygen Everest sumiteer Stepehn Venables:

'We look for true adventure, a proposal which stretches our imaginations. For example, we've supported a trio who will attempt to climb the gigantic south wall of Mount. Nuptse, non-stop. They expect to take around three days so they'll need to stop for a brew but sleeping's out - they're travelling so light they won't even be carrying sleeping bags. Other exciting ventures include a desert traverse using camels and two kayakers who paddled the 1000 kilometres along the Antarctic Peninsula - a daunting feat, bearing in mind they had to battle through Antarctic ice for a month without any outside support.'

If that sounds like your bag, then get yourself along to the Polartec web site for more details and an application form. You've got a bit of thinking and planning time too, the deadline for entries for 2003 funding is September 2002, so get scheming. Oh, can we come too?

What with Polartec handing out grants for good ideas, we were wondering if you had a brilliant plan. Sadly the best we could come up with was a plan to circumnavigate the globe with a team of trained maritime llamas climbing the highest mountain on every continent we crossed - obviously we'd avoid Asia, N and S America, etc

Na, seriously, what would your dream trip be and would Polartec be likely to fund it?

Well I am seriously considering doing a walk from the most southerly point of mainland S America, to the most northerly opint of mainland N america, however if it happens, it will be ina couple of years, and I might just go for it then. I assume they'll still be around.

BTW if anyone's interested, I am thinking that it'll take 1.5 to 2 years.

one of my future projects is going to be a trip following the route of the gold prospectors in the Yukon.
I've not done any great research yet but hope to go in a couple of years That famous photo of the huge line of people struggling up the Chilcoot pass in the snow is one of my favourite images.
I don't anticipate getting any backing for it and it will probably be financed by my constant companion, Mr Visa
