The latest International Porter Protection Group newsletter is out
with a comprehensive update on what the organisation's been up
to.
The IPPG - if you've not come across it before - was set up by Dr
Jim Duff in 1997 to campaign for better conditions for mountain
porters, initially in the Himalaya, but now right across the world
with an offshoot called Portdeadores Inka Nan trying to improve
porters' conditions on the Inca Trail.
In the last six years the organisation has made significant
progress and been responsible for building porter shelters and rescue
posts, introducing a set of simple guidelines for the treatment of
porters and setting up a thriving porter clothing bank in Nepal,
which makes protective clothing available to porters.
It's a fantastically worthwhile organisation doing a great job.
There's a load more information on the IPPG
web site including an e-mail newsletter and details of how you
can contribute either financially or by donating good quality
clothing and gear together with contact details for local reps.
If you're in the UK and would like to get involved, contact the UK
IPPG representative Brad Atwal by e-mail.
