Several dead in Everest helicopter crash

At least three feared dead as chopper crashes on trip up to base camp

A helicopter on its way to Everest base camp has crashed, leaving three people dead, according to latest reports from Reuters.

The deaths (which are apparently all of Nepalis) have yet to be confirmed, as has the condition of the 6 survivors and the identities of all 9 passengers.

With high numbers making bids to summit Everest in the run up to the 50th Anniversary, along with some difficult conditions on the mountain, there’s been plenty of speculation about the likelihood of accidents, albeit not on the trip up to base camp. It’s a tragedy that will overshadow tomorrow’s anniversary celebrations as the full details of the accident become clear.

Watched the footage and report on BBC breakfast news this morning. It appears that the helicopter clipped a stone-hut as it was looking for a suitable landing site.

The report also suggested that the casualties were not all from the helicopter and that debris including a wheel had killed people on the ground including trekkers entering base-camp (unconfirmed).

The report brought the obligatory subjects such as landing/takeoffs at altitude and the commercialisation of Everest to the fore.

Finally the Nepali authorities have issued an immediate ban on helicopter flights (closing the door after the horse has bloted?).
