Tracks
What is track history and how does it work?
|
Whilst your GPS is receiving a 3D fix, its position is being updated every second. At the same time this information is being recorded as a track history or track log of where you have been. This can be viewed on the map page in real time as a sort of electronic 'breadcrumb' trail.
Tracks and your PC
Imagine going for a walk in a new area. If you have a digital mapping system, you can keep your GPS switched on with a 3D fix and then save your walk to your PC, convert it into a route, print out the section of the OS map with your route on it and share it with your friends by email. You can return to the route in the future by saving it into a folder of your favourite routes on your PC. What if you could review your day's walk, compare it with your paper map and digital map, tell what speed you were traveling at and what time you were at any place in your log. All this is possible with the track function if you have a digital mapping system like Anquet.
The track history/ log function allows you to:
- Record your movement across the ground as a track history or track log
-
Display the log as a breadcrumb trail (dotted line) on the map page
-
When the track memory is full, the oldest part of the track is deleted to make space for inserting the newest track. This can be set up in different ways
-
Save all or part of your track history/ log as a track file
-
Clear the log whenever you like. Saved tracks will not be affected
-
Delete any or all of the saved tracks
-
Reverse a saved track so it can be navigated in reverse (e.g. to get back to base). This is called a track back
-
Download the log into a digital mapping system so that you can review your performance (position, elevation, time and date, speed)
-
With Memory-Map, you can convert a track to a route on the PC screen

GPS Training Tip
The 'backtrack' or 'tracback' can be navigated as a route taking you back virtually over the ground you walked on whereas a reversed route may not keep you on the actual path you trod on the way up.

GPS Training Tip
Spend some time getting used to the track function. It is powerful and will prove very helpful to you even if you don't have a digital mapping system. Remember to clear your track history/ log at the start of each day.
