Overview: Ice cream, cheese, beer and
rolling green hills are the attractions of this route in the upper Dove
valley of Derbyshire's White Peak. The lower Dove and Manifold valleys
are well known for their scenic beauty, and amongst the most popular
walks anywhere in the country. Hartington village is the gateway to the
upper Dove, with fine walking in all directions.
To the south the river cuts a deep valley, but to the north
the limestone plateau of the White Peak dominates. The village boasts a
brewery, cheese factory, specialist home-made ice cream shop and a
Youth Hostel and makes an ideal base to explore the plateau using a
network of public footpaths and minor roads, or the nearby abandoned
railways which have been converted into trails for walkers and
cyclists.
This route takes in the gently rolling hills north of
Hartington up to Sheen Hill and Pilsbury, site of an ancient Motte and
Bailey Castle. [Full route]
